Our School Council Rep - Jess

Meet Jess - our School Council Rep.
Jess Charlton, Jake's big sister, is in Room 27. She is one of 14 School Council member's that meet regularly with Mr McKenzie to discuss issues that arise from our students concerning the school and to plan events such as mufti days.
Jess comes to our class once a week and we have a class meeting. At this meeting the children hear back from Jess's previous council meeting and we can then share ideas, give praise and voice concerns if we have any.

Fun with Friendships

Friendships are so important to us all and every now and then we need to be reminded just why they are such good things to have and how to hold on to them.
Today we had a lot of discussion on what makes a good friend and learnt some tactics for when problems arise with our friendships at school.
Freddo the Fantastic Rm 22 FRIEND was created! Check him out on our video clip below, some would say he's rather freaky looking with his real hair (so glad you got a hair cut on Thursday Jake!) and photograph facial features.......... but he is helping us focus on what's important. Nice painting though, thanks Brigit, Gracie, Maneo and Jade.

Kitchen Science

Over the next 3 weeks the Year 4 classes are conducting a variety of Science Experiments for our School Wide Inquiry Unit 'Kaboom!' Our focus is on Kitchen Science and the children will spend two lessons with each teacher.

Last week in Room 22 we looked at Liquids, Solids and Gases and we made delicious vanilla ice cream. It was a simple and quick experiment that many of the class are keen to try again and at home - and this time make a much larger amount!

Making Ice Cream
Aim - to make a liquid change to a solid

Method -
Equipment - ice, salt, blue milk, sugar, vanilla essence, small and large ziplock plastic bags

Process - 1: Put 2 cups of ice and 2 Tablespoons of salt into the large plastic bag
2: Put 100ml of BLUE milk, 2 Tablespoons of sugar and 3-4 drops of vanilla essence
into the small plastic bag. Ensure it is securely closed.
3: Put the small plastic bag inside the large plastic bag and shake for 5- 10 minutes
4: Feel the small bag and when it has changed to a solid state remove the bag and
rinse it under the tap. Open the bag and serve your ice cream.

Results
We learnt that the salt dissolved into the ice, drawing heat away from the milk mixture causing it to freeze more quickly. The liquid milk was changed into a solid. However when we put the ice cream into our warm mouths it became a liquid again!
The 'Ice Makers' collect the ice and salt
The 'Dairy Farmers' gather up the ingredients for ice cream making
Georgie makes sure the bag is tightly sealed. We didn't want any salt in our sweet ice cream!
The 'Agitator' nearly ready to get shaking.
Tasting Time - Yummy!
Isabella would like a second helping please
The 'Ice Cream Truck' collected the spoons and serving dishes and served the ice cream to all their group members.

Mother's Day Surprises!

We have been very busy creating Mother's Day surprises this week. Miss Lythgoe got us to secretly bring in a favourite top to have our photo taken in. She got these printed in black and white. We used mosaic squares to create beautiful, bright photo frames and attached our photos to the back. After putting on a piece of backing card and writing a message to our Mum we attached a couple of magnets so the frames could stick to our fridges.
Miss Lythgoe bought some wrapping paper for us to get them home without Mum seeing them. We can't wait to see Mum's face when she opens them on Mother's Day!

Autumn Owls

For art this week Room 22 made owls. First we drew lots of little owls in our art books. Then we picked out our fave one and drew it on a good piece of paper. We painted them by dabbing our owls with the side of a brush. WE had to spray blue dye onto the backgrounds. Next we went on a leaf and stick hunt! All of us used the glue gun to place a stick where the owl would be standing and stuck on the leaves as feathers with PVA glue.

We hope you like our owls!!!
